When Should You Shop Your Auto Rate?

The renewal moments that usually mean it is time to get new auto insurance quotes, and why loyalty rarely pays off with one carrier.

The Guide

What You Need to Know

New York auto insurers reprice risk constantly, which means loyalty to one carrier can quietly cost you money even if your driving record has not changed. A few specific moments are worth using as a trigger to get new quotes.

A renewal notice with a rate increase is the most obvious one. Insurers rarely explain a jump in plain terms, and the increase is not always tied to anything you did. Comparing your renewal price against two or three other carriers takes a few minutes and tells you whether the increase is market-wide or carrier-specific.

Life changes matter too. Moving, adding or removing a driver, paying off a vehicle, or a teenager reaching driving age all shift your risk profile enough that a fresh comparison is worth doing rather than assuming your current carrier already adjusted fairly.

Finally, a lapse in tickets or claims history is a good time to check in. Many carriers reward a clean multi-year record more aggressively than others, so a driver who was expensive to insure two years ago may qualify for meaningfully better pricing today.
